Library FAQs

Q: What is The Breton Group's history with Michigan libraries?

A: Our first library client was the Greenville Public Library (now the Flat River Community Library) in 1995. We conducted a feasibility study and then a capital campaign to help the Greenville community raise $1.2 million for a new library. Since then we have worked with more than 50 libraries and the Library of Michigan Foundation, conducting needs assessments, feasibility studies, capital campaigns and millage/bond campaigns to help libraries grow. Through our library experience, we have learned that community involvement is key to any successful project, and we build community participation into all of our services. We work with libraries from the time they realize they need to grow through the millage/bond election celebration. In addition, we present frequently at the Loleta Fyan Rural Libraries Conference and at MLA.

Q: What is the advantage of The Breton Group, rather than the library staff, conducting needs assessment?

A: Because needs assessment provides the basis for "making the case" for library growth, it should reflect both community and professional input. Our process invites participation by key community members and uses national library planning standards and Michigan library statistics. Participants learn about library programs, funding, the value of the library to the greater community and how space constraints impact library service. Through discussion, research and objective evaluation, a facility and funding plan emerges that is realistic, fiscally reasonable and "owned" by the community.

Q: What is the value of conducting a feasibility study before raising money for a library building project?

A: A feasibility study offers several advantages, including:

  • Identifying potential obstacles to financial support
  • Measuring the level of support for the project
  • Building ownership among potential donors and volunteers
  • Providing information critical to developing a successful campaign plan
  • Preventing a negative experience, i.e., failing to reach a stated financial goal.

Q: What is the advantage of conducting a capital campaign in advance of a millage/bond election?

A: A capital campaign can set the stage for a successful election. Over a period of several months, it "makes the case" for library growth through media coverage, presentations to community groups and organizations, special events at the library, campaign newsletters, etc. In addition, the campaign involves many volunteers. Because they are already invested in the project, volunteers and donors will vote yes at the polls. (See Library Resources: Vol. 3, Issue 1, Spring 2004 newsletter)

Q: How does a library justify hiring a consultant to raise money or help with an election?

A: A library's potential for success is much greater with The Breton Group as your partner. First, we know Michigan libraries, including their strengths and challenges. Second, we offer a process that has proven successful in helping many communities, including Chelsea, Fremont, Coloma, Sandusky, Spring Lake, Belding, Cheboygan, Hillsdale and Clare (to name a few). Hiring The Breton Group is an investment in the success of your project, the same as hiring an architect and construction company.

Q: How do we know what service we need?

A: The best way to determine the appropriate service for you is for us to meet with the library board and director to learn more about your specific needs. At that time we will explain our services and determine together how we can best help you move forward with your project, fundraising, etc. We will meet with you at the library, at no obligation to you, so that we can see first-hand what your challenges are. Call us today to arrange a meeting.

Q: How does The Breton Group charge for specific services?

A: We charge a flat fee for each service provided. The fee is based on the time and effort we know we will put into the project and is billed over the course of the service. The fee is reflected in the contract at the beginning of the service.

Q: How do we determine if The Breton Group is the right consultant for us?

A: First, talk with libraries with whom we have worked. Ask them about the quality of our work, our campaign model, our working relationship and results. Ask if they would hire us again. Second, consider that we live and work in Michigan. We know the economy and its impact on fundraising. In addition, our proximity allows flexibility in scheduling so that we can be there for a special meeting or to address an unexpected problem. Third, we are the only library consulting firm that offers a continuum of service - we prepare you for success from the time you recognize the need to grow until the final vote is counted. Finally, invite us for an interview. Get to know us personally, tell us about your library and your needs and let us tell you how we would approach your project specifically. Then make an informed decision about whether we are a good match for your needs.
